Timber Wall Panels or Wood Roll? Choosing Your Profile and Range
Share
Choose Fluted & Batten Timber Wall Panels for a structured feature wall in Scallop, Demi Round or Batten, and choose Flexible Wood Roll for curves, furniture, cabinetry and larger areas at a lower cost per square metre. Both give you the fluted or scalloped look without heavy rigid panelling, and both are fixed with adhesive rather than a peel-and-stick backing.
What is the difference between Timber Wall Panels and Wood Roll?
- Fluted & Batten Timber Wall Panels: 120cm x 60cm panels in Scalloped, Demi Round and Batten designs, in an oak grain, white pre-primed or natural birch finish. Lightweight, and flexible enough for gentle curves. Fixed with a construction adhesive suitable for timber or decorative wall panels.
- Flexible Wood Roll: a flexible roll made from wood pulp pressed into a mould to form the 3D profile, supplied with a raw surface finish ready to be painted. Cut to size with scissors or a Stanley knife and fixed with contact adhesive or Liquid Nails. It suits wall features, bedheads, furniture and cupboard doors.
What designs can you choose from?
Timber Wall Panels come in three designs. Scallop gives a soft scalloped fluted look. Demi Round has deeper, rounded grooves for a bold fluted effect, with each half dowel about 25mm wide and up to 10mm thick at the peak. Batten is a modern vertical batten design, 5mm thick, for a more structured look.
Wood Roll comes in four profiles: Scallop, Large Scallop, Demi Round and Large Demi Round. The Large versions give broader, bolder curves.
What finishes are available?
Scallop and Demi Round Timber Panels come in an oak grain finish (suitable for sealing, oiling or staining) and a white pre-primed finish that is ready to paint in any colour. Batten panels come in a natural birch finish that can be sealed, stained or oiled. Wood Roll has a raw surface finish ready to be painted; a light sand first helps, and you can also stain it or finish it with a clear coat. Either way, allow the adhesive to cure before painting or sealing.
How much do you need?
Each Timber Wall Panel is 120cm x 60cm and covers 0.72m². Scallop, Demi Round and Batten panels all come 2 per carton, covering 1.44m². Wood Roll is sold by the roll, which suits larger feature walls and wrapped furniture. Measure the wall in square metres and add 10–15% for cuts, as covered in our coverage guide.
How are they installed?
For Timber Wall Panels, install onto clean, dry interior surfaces such as plasterboard, MDF, plywood or timber. Plan the layout and dry lay the panels first, then fix them with construction adhesive, edge to edge with no grout. Cut slowly for the cleanest edge, especially on the oak grain and birch finishes. For Wood Roll, measure, cut with sharp scissors or a Stanley knife, and fix with contact adhesive. Neither range is designed for wet areas, so use tiles for splashbacks and wet walls.
Which should you choose?
- An oak grain, natural birch or paint-ready feature wall: Timber Wall Panels.
- A modern vertical look: Batten.
- Curved walls, furniture or cabinetry: Wood Roll, which wraps easily around curves and furniture.
- A bigger area on a tighter budget: Wood Roll generally works out cheaper per square metre. See our Wood Roll vs MDF comparison.
- A deep, bold flute: Demi Round in either range.
