Wall Panels vs Stick-On Tiles: Which Is Right for Your Project?
Share
Choose wall panels for a textured, architectural feature wall; choose stick-on tiles for a wet-area splashback or a tiled look. Both install without demolition or trades, but they solve different problems — panels are about texture and dimension, tiles are about a tiled finish and water resistance.
What's the core difference between wall panels and stick-on tiles?
Fluted & Batten Wall Panels create a textured, dimensional, architectural surface — the look of timber cladding or joinery detail without the weight or cost. Stick-on tiles create a flat, tiled finish — the look of ceramic, subway or natural stone tile, in a water-resistant material. If the brief is "feature wall with depth and texture," panels win. If the brief is "this needs to look and function like tile," stick-on tiles win.
Which is better for a feature wall?
Wall panels, in most cases. Each panel measures 120cm x 60cm (0.72m²), and each carton of 2 panels covers 1.44m² — designed specifically for feature sections, bedhead walls, hallway features and full living-room or commercial feature walls. Measure your wall in square metres, divide by 1.44m² per carton, and add about 10% for offcuts.
Which is more water-resistant?
Stick-on tiles. STA's Vinyl and Composite tile ranges are water-resistant by design, suitable for bathroom and kitchen splashbacks, laundries and other wet areas. Wall panels aren't designed for frequent water exposure — occasional splashes are fine, but a wet-area wall or splashback should be tiled, not panelled.
Which is easier to install?
Both are DIY-friendly with no trades required, but the method differs. Stick-on tiles are self-adhesive and go up with a Stanley knife and silicone for the edges. Wall panels are fixed with a quality construction adhesive and cut to size, and benefit from planning the layout with the wall panel calculator before starting, since panel joins need to line up for the cleanest finish.
Can you combine both in the same space?
Yes, and it's a common approach — panels for a dry feature wall or joinery detail, tiles for the adjacent wet-area splashback or floor. Treating them as complementary finishes rather than competing options usually gives the best result in a kitchen or bathroom renovation.
Browse the Fluted & Batten Wall Panels range for feature walls, or the full Tiles range for wet areas and tiled finishes. Order a sample kit to compare textures side by side before deciding.
