Can You Lay Stick-On Floor Tiles Over Your Existing Floor?

Yes, you can lay STA's peel-and-stick vinyl floor tiles straight over your existing floor. They are designed to go over existing floor tiles, concrete, timber floors, composite floors and pretty much any smooth, flat surface, with no demolition, no grout and no tiler. Each tile is 2mm thick with a textured, P3-rated anti-slip surface, and you do not need to fill the existing grout lines first.

What floors can you install over?

  • Existing floor tiles (ceramic, porcelain, marble and more)
  • Concrete floors
  • Timber floors
  • Composite floors
  • Pretty much any smooth, flat surface

Whatever the floor, it needs to be clean, dry, flat and free from dust, grease or loose material.

Do you need to fill the grout lines first?

No. The tiles are designed to be installed directly over suitable floors that have grout lines, so there is no filling or levelling step for standard grout joints. The 2mm material and textured finish cover old floors well.

How do you prepare the floor?

  • Clean with sugar soap or a mild dishwashing liquid and warm water, and let the floor become touch dry.
  • Remove any dust, grease, soap residue or loose material.
  • Use fine sandpaper where needed to knock back rough spots.
  • Cut with a Stanley knife and a fresh blade, using a ruler and pencil for straight lines.
  • Finish the edges with silicone or caulk.

When do you need extra adhesive?

The tiles are self-adhesive and stick securely to most suitable floors, but some flooring types need extra hold. For those, use a water-based, solvent-free vinyl flooring adhesive, which is low odour and easy to clean up, and works on timber, concrete and fibre-cement surfaces. The same adhesive is recommended if you want to use floor tiles on a wall or splashback, since the standard backing is designed for flat, horizontal surfaces.

Are they suitable for bathrooms, laundries and kitchens?

Yes. The range is water-resistant with a P3-rated anti-slip surface, which suits bathrooms, powder rooms, laundries and other wet areas. Installing inside a shower is at your own discretion. For the full explanation, read our guides on slip ratings and water resistance.

How do you look after them?

Sweep regularly and mop lightly with a mild cleaner. Installed floors are easy to keep clean, and customers regularly report that sweeping and light mopping is all they need.

Which should you choose: tiles or planks?
